Crafters of earth-shaking Live Roleplaying Events
On the eve of Last Chance!
Since the event is almost upon us, we are no longer handing out any more character assignments in advance. You can still get suited up with a character at the advance check-in will be occuring at the Second Cup at the Stanley Milner Library(7 Sir Winston Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton) on the afternoon of the event(Saturday, March 12th) from 1pm - 5pm. After that, we'll see you at the game, where we can probably still set you up with a character, though selection will be mighty low by that time. Still, walk-up players are definitely encouraged!
This should be the last time the webpage is going to be updated pre-event, because in an hour I'm getting in a car and driving to Edmonton! We'll still try to reply to e-mails and the like but, really, your best bet for getting any questions answered from this point in is to just show up tomorrow.
See you all in the 'verse!
Event Essentials
You can check-in in advance of the event itself, and doing so is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED. Advance check-in will be occuring at the Second Cup at the Stanley Milner Library(7 Sir Winston Churchill Square in downtown Edmonton) on the afternoon of the event(Saturday, March 12th) from 1pm - 5pm. After that period, we will be moving to the event space itself to start setting up and the like.
Organizers will be able to answer questions about rules, questions about the setting, and/or your character. Note: Get your character package in advance = more in-character time in the venue!

Event Start Time: Doors will open at 7. Game ends at 11.
The following are not allowed in the venue:
- Real, functional guns.
- "Loaded" prop guns; includes caps, nerf & water.
- Confetti, rice or other annoying clean up issues.
- Pyrotechnics of any kind.
- Alcohol. Flasks are OK. Alcohol props are OK. Alcohol is not.
Refreshments: There will be some light snacks and your registration does include one free beverage. Beverages are also available for purchase onsite.
There will be a coat check.
Character List
Because the number of characters left is rapidly dwindling, we're now having people pick from the list at the characters page instead of completing the Questionnaire. You can also look on that page for a list of who has been assigned what thus far.
Character Questionnaire
The Character Questionnaire is finally up! You'll want to fill this little baby out in order to get a character assigned for the event, if you don't already have one assigned from a previous event. Remember though, we won't assign you a character if you haven't yet paid your event fee!
Happy New Year!
I hope everyone had a good New Year's! The early bird registration for Firefly: Last Chance is now closed(this also means we will no longer be taking requests to reprise characters from previous events), but pre-registration continues to be open - make sure to reserve your place in the event as soon as possible! Take a look at this page for details. Expect a list of characters for folks to choose from to be posted up sometime in mid-January. Take care, have a great 2011, and we'll see you on March 12th!
PayPal Link for Early Bird Registration is up
The PayPal link and other early registration info is now up at the Last Chance How-To-Play page. The event fee is only $20 until January 1st, after that it is $25. We won't consider you officially registered in the event until you have paid the event fee.
Firefly: Last Chance Promo Blurb
Boomtown has been nothing but a headache for Richard Shikai, former Alliance Admiral, former Mayor of Boomtown, and now the new Governor of the border world of Paquin. Boomtown has become a hideout for outlaws, organized crime and former browncoats turned thieves. Unruly miners and corrupt Alliance officials compound the problems, and Deep Earth Paquin Mine is failing in these desperate times. The last straw was when the Boomtown spaceport was destroyed by terrorists on the same night as Paquin's previous Governor was murdered, Boomtown's sheriff gunned down in the street, and a shootout in the local saloon claimed several lives!
Enough was enough. In what might be either an attempt to deal with the problem or a simple washing his hands of it, the Governor has announced that the Alliance will not be rebuilding the Boomtown spaceport, and will indeed be pulling out or selling off Alliance assets in the town - effectively abandoning the town as an entity. He's even expressed interest in offloading his own personal interest in Boomtown's Deep Earth Paquin mine - a sure sign he thinks the town has reached the end of its rope. These announcements have rippled out over Paquin, and perked ears both in the Core Worlds and out on the Rim. Vultures circle, and while the town faces an uncertain future, outsiders hope the situation may be a bargain hunter's dream.
At the ritzy Core World-inspired Governor's mansion, Shikai is throwing a party. The event is an open house, with no formal invitations required, and is sure to be the social event of the season. Depending on who you ask, the purpose is to sell off Alliance assets in Boomtown, a demonstration of control in the face of lawlessness, or commemoration of the spaceport tradgedy. And that's not even including the rumours that the event will be used as a cover for black market operations to enrich organized crime and line the pockets of some corrupt officials. It'll be quite the crowd - sure, there'll be your stuffy Alliance officials, fancy Core Worlds ladies and corp types in suits looking to socialize and maybe make a profit. But there's also going to be all sorts of riffraff - ship's crews of dubious legality coming in to meet with contacts and to help move goods(and people), organized criminals who may or may not try to blend in with the high class types, never mind the outlaws, gunslingers and thieves who might be there offering bodyguard services, or might be there to rob someone blind. Of course, some of Boomtown's residents will show up too, and they may not be happy about what is going on... Don't let the glass and steel fool you - the Governor's mansion is but a tiny isle of civilization on what remains a rough n' tumble border world.
Why don't you come on down for one final wild night in the 'verse, and give Boomtown one Last Chance?
Firefly: Last Chance is a Live Action Role-playing event set in the universe of Joss Whedon's Firefly and Serenity. It will be taking place the evening of Saturday, March 12th, 2011 at the beautiful Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton. Both novice and veteran role-players alike are welcome, no previous experience is required! Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, and if you register before January 1st the fee to play is only $20($25 after January 1st). There will be opportunities to reprise your favorite character from previous Apocalypse Productions events, and we may be able to make some accommodations for special character concept requests, but only if you register and get your money to us before January 1st. Judging from the numbers at last year's event, we may end up having to cut off accepting players at some point, so the sooner you sign up the better!
For more information, see our website at www.apocalypseproductions.ca, or e-mail us at firefly.boomtown@gmail.com.
Firefly: Last Chance will take place March 12th 2011
We now have a confirmed venue for Firefly: Last Chance - we will be running the event Saturday, March 12th, 2011, at the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton. Stay tuned to this station for more information as it develops!
Significant delays ahead
We still have no venue confirmed, and with time running short to organize an event for this fall it looks like Firefly: Last Chance will not be occuring in the fall. There is a possiblity of a different, smaller Firefly event, though those are just possibilities. In all likelihood, Firefly: Last Chance will run in the spring. Apologies to everyone who was looking forward to seeing the event happen in September!
Planning for Firefly: Last Chance
We're in the middle of planning for Firefly: Last Chance, to take place in Fall 2010. Expect to see some fresh updates of the site over the next couple of months. In the meantime, we're asking for folks' opinions on venue - should we do another wild west-style border worlds game, or switch it up and go with a more sophisiticated Core Worlds setting? Toss us an e-mail at firefly.boomtown@gmail.com and let us know!
Three more days - are you ready?
The game is only a few days away - we're finishing off the last of our tasks to get ready, and we hope everyone else is ready too!
First and foremost - if you haven't checked your character assignment on the webpage, please do so. I know a couple of folks had asked what characters they were given, and the answer is that we're not replying to everyone individually(we have a hundred players!), but all the assignments are posted on the character list on the webpage.
If you know anyone who wants them to play, please have them get in contact with us as soon as possible. As of Wednesday, we'll be closing for pre-assignments of characters and anyone who still needs a character after that point will just be asked to show up early at the event. Unless we have a huge surge of players in the next few days, we will have room for several walk-ups at the game itself, so feel free to drag out any last minute players you can find. We would of course prefer to pre-assign wherever possible.
Fort Edmonton Park will let us in as early as 4:30p - that is when Deb and I will be on site. Our sign-in table will be *behind* Jasper House. If you decide to come early, of course, you can take a chance to tour the park a little - if you come after 4:30p and use the side entrance, you won't be charged the admission fee to the park if you want to take a look around it. Deb and I will be available, taking admission, handing out character packages, and answering questions from 5pm on. This is also an excellent chance to meet with fellow players, both to talk out of character and if you want to, to do some light in character roleplaying to establish connections with characters your character knows in advance of the event. The rules and setting briefing will take place promptly at 7pm, and general in character play will begin at 7:15pm. The game will go to just before midnight. We have the event space until 2am, and people are welcome to stick around for "afters" at the venue site instead of trying to go out to a restaurant or the like - we'll have some beverages and snacks from the game, and will likely be ordering in pizza as well.
.Please try to come at least a few minutes in advance of the 7pm game start, so you can get your character sheet and pay up in advance. Once 7pm rolls around, if we haven't seen you yet and you haven't prepaid, that is when we'll start making assigned characters available for walk-up players to take. (This is part of the reason we'll always encourage some walk-ups - fill in the gaps left by no-shows). In general, if you know you are going to be late or can't make it last minute, we'd vastly prefer if you let us know.
Between 4:30p and 5:30p, you'll be able to drive down a side entrance and park immediately behind Jasper House(ie: within a few feet of our sign-in table). If you decide to park there though, you won't be able to move your car likely until after we clean up at the end of the game. After 5:30p, you'll have to park in the main parking lot and walk through the park to get to us.
We will be providing some beverages and light snacks over the course of the game. We aren't allowed to bring in any homemade food, but if you wish to bring any pre-packaged store or restaurant bought food, you can. If you want to be generous and add it to the snacks repository for the whole game, that is even better. If you want to get in on the pizza ordering for after game winddown, you'll probably want to bring a few bucks as we'll have a sheet where you can sign up for pizza ordering and leave money for such.
Though there is plenty of room inside Kelly's Saloon and Jasper House, I expect many folk will want to engage in at least some roleplay outside, so prepare accordingly. It is supposed to be mostly sunny that day, but if it looks like rain bring an umbrella. Some folks might also want to bring sunscreen, especially if you'll be wandering around the park earlier.
Feel free to bring your cameras - one of the advantages of having a sci-fi setting is digital cameras can all be perfectly in character, and at an exciting event like the tournament it makes some sense for many characters to be snapping photos. :)
Check out the forums - they've got the rules to Tall Card(the game played in the Tournament) posted, as well as some details about pre and post game socialization.
Apologies to those who have asked for character write-ups and not gotten them yet - we've never done an event of this scale before, and we're having to make a fair amount of adjustments to write-ups as people drop and sign-up last minute. If you've asked for one, you'll get 'em when they're done.
If you want to pay in advance and have not yet done so, you have two options: pay via paypal, or meet with us at Remedy on the Friday before the game(see below). We don't have time anymore to meet folks in person to collect cash. The paypal button will vanish Friday night, so once Saturday comes your only option is to pay at the door. We can take only cash at the door, in case you were wondering.
Lastly - we'll be hanging out at Remedy Cafe(at 8631 109 Street Nw) from 5pm-8pm on Friday the 25th of September. This is a chance to come talk with us if you have any questions, and we can also accept money there too. If everything goes according to plan, we'll have our character packages all ready then too, so if you want to pick your character up one day early, you should be able to(if everything goes according to plan).
For all your other information needs, be sure as always to check out www.apocalypseproductions.ca!
Take care, and see you in the 'verse on Saturday!
Two Weeks Away! - More characters up
The game is only two weeks away, and we're very busy getting stuff ready. Some of the character write-ups are in a semi-presentable state right now - if you're eager for yours, you can e-mail us at firefly.boomtown@gmail.com and request yours in advance, though we make no promises about when it might get to you or not. If you haven't completed your registration by paying yet, I'd recommend doing so. Probably the most convenient way is through the PayPal link on the How to Play page.
The final batch of characters up at the the Firefly: Favourite Mistakes Characters page has been added. There are a little under 20 slots left. If we fill up completely, we'll probably still be able to take some people at the door, either filling in for no-shows or playing as "extras" or in more minor roles to whom we don't have to give more complete write-ups. Still, if you know anyone who is interested in playing, I'd get them to contact us ASAP.
New Characters Added
The character list at the the Firefly: Favourite Mistakes Characters page has been updated again with about twenty new characters. Of course, several of those were immediately snatched up by players who had already submitted their requests but couldn't be fitted with characters before due to demand. As of this writing, there are about 20 free characters left - that number might increase depending on some things we're working out, but of course it'll eventually decrease. So if you know anyone who is still sitting on their laurels deciding whether or not they want to play, direct 'em here and get them to pick their characters as soon as possible, while there is still some selection left.
Also, of course, you are encouraged to pay in advance, both to avoid hassle at the door and to make sure to lock in your spot. Game fee for those paying in advance is $15, and instructions on how to get the money to us are on the How to Play page.
Last but not least - are you concerned about missing updates to the webpage? We try not to be consistently e-mailing everyone everyday, and not everyone has Facebook, so I'll now be mirroring all the website newsfeed updates to a topic on the forums. If you want to be notified by e-mail whenever there is an update, create a forum account and then subscribe to the following thread.
Character List Updated
After a long delay, the character list at the Firefly: Favourite Mistakes Characters page has finally been updated. Check there to see what character you've been assigned. There were about half a dozen folks whom we couldn't find assignments for in this initial burst - we got so many requests so fast that some characters got picked as people's top three over and over again. Those people who already entered their requests and couldn't be satisfied will have priority in future assignments, and we'd ask them to send us their next top three picks.
Expect more characters to be added to the list relatively shortly.
Also, we've decided to bump back the deadline for earlybird payment to August 24th, since neither Deb nor I have really been available otherwise. Check out the How to Play page for information on how to pay(as well as information on venue location, dates and times, and all that good stuff).
Character List Posted!
The character list is finally up at the Firefly: Favourite Mistakes Characters page. Take a look, e-mail us your top three picks. My apologies both for the lateness and sloppiness of the list - I didn't quite get things finished before I left for Chicago, and am posting now from a puny netbook that can barely keep the spreadsheet we keep the list in open and remain functioning. Expect some cleanup when I return to Canada.
(p.s. I am in Chicago. Weee!)
Setting and costuming info...
I've posted some basic setting and costuming links up on the forum. Check it out, and feel encouraged to contribute any useful Firefly lore you might have!
No longer accepting requests to reprise or for custom characters
We are now done accepting special character requests and requests to reprise characters from the previous event. Soon we'll have the character list posted, and then you can choose your characters from what is presented there. We'll still accept character suggestions of course, but we make no promise that a) we'll take them(and if they are overly specific, we almost certainly won't) or b) that you'll get to play them - anything after this point will just be posted in the big character list, which will be a combination of first-come, first-served and Storyteller's choice.
Deadline to reprise a character today!
If you are intending on reprising your character from last year's Firefly: Boomtown event, today is the deadline to let us know. Send us an e-mail at firefly.boomtown@gmail.com telling us who you are, what character you played, and what the state of them and their plot was at the end of the game
The same goes for those who have special character requests they'd like to make - email us by the end of the day.
For everyone else, expect to see a character list appear on this site by the end of the month. There should be plenty of characters to choose from so everyone should be able to find something they're happy with, presuming they don't leave chosing until the last minutes, of course.
New Website and Forum Up!
The new website and forum are now up and active(otherwise, you wouldn't be reading this message!). Content is pretty scarce right now, and most of the pages just display 'coming soon', but be sure to check things out in the future.
